Sometimes, you remember a video game character because they are fun to play or you remember a boss because they challenge you to no end and you finally manage to beat them after the 100th try. In the case of Croco from Super Mario RPG, you remember him because he drives you absolutely insane. In case you have blocked out this bad guy, he is the little purple crocodile that steals Mallow’s frog coin. Mario, having just teamed up with Mallow, is forced to track down Croco. The only problem is, it takes forever, and he taunts you ever step of the way. By the time you finally catch him, you are ready to scream and put your fist through the screen. I give credit to the designers here for crafting an easy enemy that manages to get you so excited so early on in the game. Just when you think you have gotten rid of him, however, he comes back throughout the game, always causing havoc and making you angry. When I buy Super Mario Galaxy 2 soon, I hope Croco is up to his old tricks. It is fun to fight an enemy that manages to get to you so much.

I myself am a man of few words. I don’t like talking unless there’s a reason for it, and I also happen to believe that it’s better to let your actions speak for you. That’s probably why I really enjoy Link. I can’t think of one time that we’ve ever heard Link speak – everyone else does all the talking for him! And yet, at the same time, while he doesn’t talk, he’s definitely one to make sure that his opinions are known by using his expressions or, if the case calls for it, his sword!

The Zelda games are actually great games, especially for children who are too old for the kiddie games, and who are too young for the older and often more scary games. These games have a great storyline, and one that’s usually not too scary for a younger child to play, while, at the same time, being a bit challenging. And it helps that you always get a hand along the way thanks to one type of character or another. I think that, all in all, Link is the best Nintendo character out there for a number of reasons, and while I’ll buy New Super Mario Bros Wii, I’ll probably play any Zelda game first!

It isn’t every day that you favourite video game hero is forced to fight a living, breathing and incredibly powerful wedding cake, but that is exactly what Mario has to do in the hit game Super Mario RPG. What makes this so much fun and what makes Bundt my favourite character ever is how powerful he (she?) is. They could have made this wedding cake come to life a pushover, but they didn’t. They made this cake into a fierce fighting machine that is one of the most powerful characters that Mario faces up to that point. Not only that, but Bundt is a crazy looking cake. He giggles back and forth and Mario is forced to try to put out the candles on top of the cake. You had better make sure you level up before you try to take this giant cake down, or you will regret it when Bundt defeats you and your gang of friends. I hope that Bundt can make a cameo in the Super Mario Galaxy 2 game. Mario doesn’t play with his food nearly as often as he should! This is why I think that no enemy is more underrated or more fun than the fighting wedding cake known as Bundt.

One of the neatest things about the Mario series of games is that the designers made it very clear who their influences were. The same studio that came up with Super Mario RPG was also in charge of creating the Final Fantasy series, and the two clearly crossed over with the appearance of Culex. Although Culex never actually appears in any Final Fantasy games, he is clearly a boss inspired by the game, and better yet, he spars with Mario to help prepare him for the end boss of the game. He offers a very strict test that many say is just as hard as the end boss, so if you are thinking that you are finished with the game and you want to see if your levels are high enough, this is the guy you want to test out.

Culex appears in Monstro Town and many gamers stumble upon him by accident. He lives behind a door that is tough to get to, but once you find him, it will be an experience you will never forget. Culex is without a doubt one of the coolest monsters in the history of gaming and the coolest Mario character of all time. I can’t wait for Super Mario Galaxy 2!

It is difficult these days to imagine a video game world before the likes of Super Mario Bros. 3. This was the game featured in the hit film The Wizard and the one that really showed what the 8-bit Nintendo could do. It was also the game that gave us the Koopa Kids, the offspring of Bowser and the bosses at the end of every level in SMB 3. Each Koopa Kid has their own style, their own weapons and their own ability to beat Mario. Since they are such a diverse group, they have my vote for the coolest characters in Mario history.

I can only hope that the Koopa Kids have a starring role in the new Super Mario Galaxy 2 game. Like most Mario characters, they aren’t all used in every game, which means that there is only a small chance they will appear. I think it is about time they got their revenge from previous games when Mario kept getting the best of them. They can combine their powers to become one elite fighting force to be reckoned with. Mario had better hope that his next game is Koopa Kid free, or he may not find it to be so easy.

There are very few video game characters that are truly immortal. Throughout most of the Super Mario Bros. 3 game, Dry Bones is one character that Mario just can’t seem to shake. Fireballs, a perfectly timed jump and other forms of offence just bounce off of him. The only weakness poor Dry Bones falls for is the invincible star. You think you have him beat? He is going to come back to life and continue to walk around. Although one could draw mythical parallels to Sisyphus, it is simply more fun to think of Dry Bones as the ultimate hunter who Mario can never defeat for good. If only all of the bad guys in these games had this kind of spirit!

I can only hope that Dry Bones make an appearance in Super Mario Galaxy 2. I dread to think what a Mario game would be like without this hero. Maybe Mario can get some more of that water he has in SMRPG that kills Dry Bones on contact. No matter what happens, I admire Dry Bones and his never give up spirit. You just can’t do any better than the one and only Dry Bones when it comes to hunting down Mario and kicking butt.

Often times, Mario will get a glimpse of a character that you are destined to fight at the beginning of the game, even if your date with destiny isn’t until the end. In the case of Exor, his ugly mug graces the cover of Super Mario RPG, and you have a very early encounter with him later on. What you don’t realize is that he isn’t the final boss, but with as cool as he looks, he might as well be. Exor is a giant sword with big, scary eyes that has helped the Smithy Gang take over Bowser’s keep. He is incredibly awesome for many different reasons, including his scary eyes, his big sword body and the fact that he just doesn’t like Mario very much. He likes to talk a big game, and if you aren’t ready to take him on, you will likely be defeated. Exor is truly an excellent enemy, and I think he would make a great addition to the new Super Mario Galaxy 2 game. They should bring back all of the Smithy gang for one final romp. It has been way too long, and Mario needs some good enemies to fight, and none were more cool looking than Exor.

Some people think it is a bit strange that I have picked a one-of character as my favourite in all of the Mario games. The Axem Rangers only appeared once, in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. They were towards the end and one of the toughest bosses you fight in the whole game because there are five of them, so you have to constantly replenish your health to stay alive. They are a good test for you to pass before you go on to the last boss, but that’s not why I like them so much. They have hilarious catch phrases that seem completely out of place during the game, and they are almost put in the game for comic relief. At least that’s the way it feels until they start kicking your butt all over the game.

There is only a tiny chance that the Axem Rangers will be in Super Mario Galaxy 2 Wii, but even if they aren’t, it is still going to be a great game. I can’t wait for this new version because if the Axem Rangers are in it, it is surely going to be the best selling game of its kind ever.

Even casual fans of the Mario franchise will admit that the constant changing of worlds, surfaces, temperatures and even styles is what made this such a memorable series. If there is water between Mario and his goal, you can bet that there is a Big Bertha around. In the early games, unless you had a star that made you invincible, there was no real way to deal with Big Bertha. You could fry her with a fireball, but she is incredibly difficult to hit, and if you miss, chances are, you are lunch. The fact that the simple Big Bertha munched me so many times and made me put my fist through my television set, she is now my favourite video game character of all time. She looks so cool, like a robot fish who isn’t going to take any guff from anyone.

I don’t know if Big Bertha is going to be in Super Mario Galaxy 2 Wii, but I sure hope so. I can’t wait to run like the wind away from her instead of trying to face her and fight. There are only a handful of characters that are this tough to beat, and Big Bertha is one of them. She needs to be in every Mario game until the end of time.

battle with one of your best fighters out of commission. When you take on the stage boss Bowyer at the end of the Forest Maze, you are forced to dodge a flurry of aeros (spelled like the rock band). If the aero lands on one of your players, you have to go into battle with that player locked out. It really makes you work harder and not rely so much on one character. Bowyer is also memorable because he spouts crazy lines the entire time you battle him. Right in the middle of a battle, he’ll belt out a NYA! This is a bizarre phrase, to be sure, but it only makes fighting him more fun. His entire body is a bow and he uses his mid section to fire aeros from. He is the kind of character that has to be seen to be believed, but one thing is for sure, when he appears in Super Mario Galaxy 2, I’ll be the happiest fan boy alive. Here is to you Bowyer, I hope you come out of retirement soon and start kicking butt again.
