I’ve been a licensed therapist for 10 years, and one thing that I bring into my treatment center is always a video game system. Many of my colleagues wonder why I bring video games into the therapy room occasionally. They feel that it separates the children I am working with from me. In fact it actually brings us closer. They relax because they’re allowed to play games, if they so choose to, and quite often I’ve learned more about a child while they were playing games than they were ever comfortable enough to reveal to me when they were not.
I think it helps that I love to play video games almost as much as the kids do. I’ve been a closet gamer for a long time, and during my spare time I can be found working my way through some virtual world or another. I’m actually a very big fan of the Mario series. I love that they’re safe for children of all ages to play and that they actually have a purpose. They’re really very non-violent and yet they’re fun for the kids to play as well.
I will definitely be purchasing the Super Mario Galaxy 2 Wii game. I have the first Galaxy game and while I don’t bring it into therapy, simply because it’s too long of a game to bring into a therapy room, I do enjoy the game a great deal. I love how the designers used other worlds in order to let Mario experience some different things, and am really hoping, in this round of the franchise, that we are able to see a great deal more variety from the worlds.
I hope that Super Mario Galaxy 2 Wii has a number of unique worlds, such as the snow world that I’ve seen, or, of course, a desert world, and there has to be a water world. Regardless of what happens with this game, I want to thank the Nintendo people for making the games so child friendly that they can be used to make the kids I’m working with relax.
