My wife has always been worried abut me playing video games with our young children. We have a pair of 3 year old twin boys who love to follow me around and to do everything that I do. That’s fine if we’re biking or taking a walk, but not quite so fine when I’m playing video games that are violent or scary. This is where my wife gets very upset – she doesn’t want the kids seeing anything violent and I, at the same time, want to be able to have some time to play and game as well.

One of the few games that I can play around them is the Galaxy game, which is why both my wife and I are excited about Super Mario Galaxy 2 game for Wii coming out. I can play Galaxy and my boys can watch Mario racing around the galaxy and the different worlds, rescuing everyone, without having to worry that they’re going to be scared of anything. Even some of the scarier scenes, such as those with Bowser, really aren’t that scary and can actually be pretty enjoyable to play, as well as to watch. And funny too, my son Zach loves to watch Bowser fall on his butt.

Another good feature in the original Galaxy game, and one that I hope they’re going to continue in the Super Mario Galaxy 2 game, is the ability for the second player to be able to capture star bits. I love playing with my boys, but it can get sort of frustrating to play with them and to have them hold me back the entire time we’re playing. I don’t mind if they play that way when they play on their own, but I like to have the game move pretty quickly, so the two player option on the original game is perfect. Nintendo really does a good job making games that both parents and kids can enjoy, and we both hope that they will continue to do so, allowing us all to play as a family.
