I love Nintendo games – the ones that are actually made by the Nintendo company – simply because they’re kid friendly. I can buy a Nintendo game without having to worry about checking for the ratings on the game, which is great because this way I don’t have to do tons of research in the game to make sure that it’s not something that’s going to keep my children, who are 8 and 5, up all night with nightmares.
That being said, the first Mario Galaxy game was a bit scary for my youngest one. She didn’t have full out nightmares, but she was definitely a little spooked by the game. And while I realize she’s a bit young, I do hope that the new Super Mario Galaxy 2 game is going to be kid friendly as the older ones where.
The other Galaxy game is kid friendly, to a point, and I realize that the creators are under a huge amount of pressure. I mean, they have to make sure that they have games that will actually sell, and on today’s market I see tons of video games that are made with lots of great graphic and violence, so it has to be hard to compete against that. I only hope, though, that Super Mario Galaxy 2 game for Wii isn’t the game where Nintendo will throw away their family convictions and will make it more edgy just to fit in. I don’t want or need an edgy game right now for my kids. What I want and need is a game that is in between edgy and childhood games, which is exactly what the other Mario games have always been.
My biggest hope is just that whatever Mario games come out, including this new Galaxy and ones that follow it, that Nintendo doesn’t lose its family friendliness. I love how family friendly the games have always been and hope that they continue to be the same way when my children have children, and so on, instead of changing to conform to what many gamers want.
